Apple and publishers sued by United States amid ebook price-fixing claims

Posted on 12 April 2012 by BobL

Source: www.techradar.com – Wednesday, April 11, 2012
The United States Department of Justice has issued a lawsuit against Apple and five of the world’s leading publishers over allegations of collusion to fix ebook prices . The suit claims the companies have conspired to ensure other retailers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble cannot lower prices. With Apple receiving 30 per cent commission per book sale, publishers are said to have given the iBooks store ‘favoured nation’ status, meaning no other outlet could sell at a lower price. Best new iPad apps The publishing houses have often threatened the likes of Amazon’s Kindle store with the withdrawal of their titles, should the retailer seek to lower the notoriously high price of ebook titles. Apple is in on that, according to the lawsuit. Settlement The writ was issued against Apple, along with Macmillan, Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and Hachette, although the latter three have already agreed to a settlement with the US government. Apple, Macmillan and Penguin are all preparing to fight, whereas the others are most likely resigned to allowing Amazon to start trimming prices. US Attourney General Eric Holder says the alleged actions of Apple and the publishing houses have already cost consumers millions. In a statement to the media, he said: “Beginning in the summer of 2009, we allege that executives at the highest levels of the companies inc…

Report: Google TV coming to Europe in September

Posted on 03 April 2012 by BobL

Source: www.engadget.com – Tuesday, April 03, 2012
Sony is making some more definitive statements on its plans to bring Google TV across to Europe. According to financial paper, Les Échos , Sony France’s marketing director said that two devices, a set-top box, priced at €200 ($ 266) and a Blu-ray player, selling for €300 ($ 399), will launch in France this September. The paper reports that it could launch across the UK, Spain and Germany at the same time. Sony’s Stephane Labrousse added that remotes for the new devices would also include a dedicated Android Market Google Play button to access the Android progenitor’s apps and media content. The Japanese manufacturer’s own Music Unlimited service will also be baked inside. Phew. There’s no word just yet on whether these are the older Intel-based models or the new, possibly cheaper, ARM range set to ship later this year . However, we expect to hear plenty more noise from Sony on its Smart TV intentions over the next few months. Is Obama Using ‘I Am My Brother’s Keeper’ to Peddle Redistribution of Wealth?

The Blaze has covered the Obama administration’s take on the Bible before. At least one college professor has even posited that the president may be ”the most explicitly Christian president in American history.” While Obama has been more than open about his allegiance to the Christian faith, there are many who question the tenets he adheres to. In a speech on Friday, he advanced some Biblical ideas that may, once again, have people questioning how his faith worldview impacts his economic policies. On Friday, Obama appeared in a campaign speech in Vermont where he spoke about helping others and the Biblical story of Cain and Abel. In his address, the president condemned what he sees as “you’re-on-your-own economics” and argued, as CNS News alleges , for policies that would transfer wealth from one group to another. “I hear politicians talking about values in an election year. I hear a lot about that. Let me tell you about values,” Obama said. “Hard work, personal responsibility — those are values. But looking out for one another. That’s a value. The idea that we’re all in this together. I am my brother’s keeper. I am my sister’s keeper. That’s a value.” Watch Obama speak about this subject, below: CNS News explains the biblical significance of this mention: In Genesis, Adam and Eve’s first-born son is Cain and their second-born son is Abel. Cain becomes a farmer and Abel becomes a shepherd. When Cain offers the fruit of his farmin
